Custom cakes require at least 10 days notice, some designs require more time. Please Contact us for more information.

Can I send you a photo of a cake that I'd like you to copy?

Yes, absolutely! Email your photo to us or stop into the bake shop.

Are all of the cakes that you've made pictured on your website?

No, that would be impossible! Check our Facebook Page, Instagram, or Twitter for more photos!

Can I "just come in" and get a cake today or tomorrow?

Unfortunately, no. We are by cake design studio and are by appointment. We book Signature, Pre-Designed Cakes at least 4 days notice. If you're thinking about a cake for this weekend, you'll need to place your order by Wednesday at noon for Friday - Sunday pickup. On occasion, we do have 'extra' cakes available, please call the bake shop with your last-minute request.

How much do the cakes cost?

Our Signature, Pre-Designed Cakes at least 4 days notice. These are the most cost-effective designs that we offer. You can find or current price list here. If you're thinking about a cake for this weekend, you'll need to place your order for your Signature Cake Design by Wednesday at noon for Friday - Sunday pickup.

Custom cakes start at $50, for a round 7" (serves 10-14) with a simple custom design. Tiered Cakes will start at $85.00 to serve 25 people. Decorations and custom designs will be subject to additional cost, and are priced by the amount of time that the decor takes for our talented staff to make. Upcharges for design are based on a cake by cake basis.

Upcharges? What are those?

Custom cake prices are based on how much time it takes for us to make the decorations on the cake. Buying a cake is like buying a car: the more upgrades you add, the higher the cost. For example, 3D sculpted characters take more time then flat-art 2D characters. The larger the cake, the more number of guests it serves, the higher the cost as well.

What is the difference between classic & gourmet flavors?

All of our cakes are "filled," meaning our round or square cakes are torted into 4 layers of cake and are 3 layers of filling (filling is the layer in between the cake - it holds the cake together!).

Our Classic flavors are our most popular - they are indeed Classics! Classic flavors are included in our standard pricing, you can choose one (1) cake flavor and one (1) filling for cake tier. Gourmet Cake Fillings are priced additionally, as are Gourmet Cake Flavors. The additional charge for Gourmet Flavors is due to the higher cost in specialty ingredients, and in some cases, labor to produce the gourmet cake filling or cake flavor option. A full list of our flavors for cakes is available here.

Most of our fillings are buttercream based, except for our lemon curd and preserves. None of our fillings are super sweet and sugary. All of our fillings and frostings are flavorful, light in mouthfeel and scratch-made.

What can you tell me about your frosting?

We use an European Buttercream on the exterior and outside presentation of most of our cakes, as a decoration or finishing element because it gives us a beautiful smooth finish that has a sheen at room temperature. It is also a great medium for design work & takes color nicely.

Can I get an unfilled cake?

No, unfortunately, all of our cakes have filling in between the layers.

We have a Gluten or Dairy Allergy, what can I order/ purchase?

Gluten-free cakes, cupcakes and cookies are available. Gluten-free cakes CONTAIN TREE NUTS. Our gluten-free cakes taste like our standard cakes! Many of our clients have called one bite into our cakes just to check that they indeed are gluten-free because they cannot tell the difference! Dairy-free cakes, absolutely! Contact us for our current menu.

What is your most popular flavor cake?

Our Classic flavors are our most popular - they are indeed Classics! Our devilish chocolate cake has been a standard for 10 years - I swear we have customers that would bang down the doors if we changed it! Alternating layers of chocolate and vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream filling is definitely the most popular choice!

What is considered "custom" & how long do we need to order?

Custom cakes require at least 10 days notice and are anything beyond our Signature Cake Collection Designs.

We strongly suggest that you start the "process" of ordering a custom cake at least 3 weeks in advance. This time will allow for the collection of information from you regarding flavors, sizing, design & budget, as well as allow ample time for our chef to price out the requested design & our staff to follow up with you. We require a deposit for all orders over $50.00.

Are "photo cakes" available at Artisan Bake Shop?

As a custom sugar art studio, we handpaint all designs and although we do not offer photo cakes, we can copy most logos and artwork. Contact us with your ideas!

Do most of the specialty cakes have fondant on them?

No, most of our designs are tasty, smooth and not-too-sweet BUTTERCREAM! Some designs do require fondant, but they are few and far between. Fondant is used as a decoration and finishing touch on most of our cakes!

How much notice do Mini Pastries require, and how are they ordered?

Yes, check out our Holiday Specials and Event Menus.

How do I transport & store my cake or cupcakes?

When driving with your cake:

  • Once a cake leaves Artisan Bake Shop, it is the sole responsibility of the customer. We cannot be responsible done to your cake once it's picked up or in case of delivery, delivered.
  • An SUV, station wagon, or minivan with the rear of the car cleared out is the best choice for travel. Sedan style cars generally do not have enough height for anything larger than a two tiered cakes.
  • Be sure that the car is thoroughly cooled when you arrive. We know its chilly, but MAX the A/C!
  • The best place to travel with the cake is in the truck or rear of the car. With the seats folded down for air-flow.
  • Seats are slanted and are NOT the best place to travel with a cake. If you place your cake on the seat - we cannot guarantee that it will not slide or tip.
  • Our two-tiered cakes are boxed in a shallow box and not completely boxed to the top, as it is very difficult to remove a cake from a deep box.
  • We will always load the cake into the car for you. On rainy days we'll give you a lid to take the cake out the car so it doesn't get wet.
  • Please be aware that we can give you tips on how to drive with a cake in the car. We drive all over Southern New England and arrive with cakes in perfect condition. We cannot guarantee that with your specific driving habits that your cake will arrive completely intact.
  • On back roads, avoid all potholes and drive slowly. We know that other drivers will be annoyed... that's OK!
  • On the highway SPEED is not a factor, BRAKING QUICKLY & GOING SLOW around the curves and ramps is KEY.
  • During the summer, months pick the cake up as close as possible to the event start time. When you get the cake home, an air conditioned room or a cool / dry basement is the best place for storage. The fridge is ok too, but only for 1-2 hours if it is going to stay closed. Humidity can ruin cakes and make them run and melt!
  • If you decide to pick up your cake and are nervous at the time of pickup, and decide on the day-of-pickup that you now would like to choose delivery - please be aware that we may not be available.
